Handmade clocks and toys:
Wooden toys are becoming popular as gifts for
young children as an alternative to the more
mass-produced variety of toys. They are safe and
designed especially for younger users, and are often
made of sustainable woods or even recycled wood. Any
paints used are almost always non toxic and often
eco friendly too.
There are a wide variety of wooden toys available
which can suit all ranges. Young children may
appreciate, for example, play vehicles like fire
engines, stacking bricks and rings and miniature
play sets. Older children may prefer marble runs,
build sets and even creative items such as carpenter
sets.
There are also different types of toys that can
be used in different situations, for example outdoor
games and construction sets that are also made of
the same material are given as gifts. While these
may not be so practical in winter, they can often
make an enjoyable summer activity.
So why would people prefer choosing toys made of
wood as gifts instead of the more modern, common
plastic or electronic toys that children are so
familiar with?
Many people are turning to toys which are more
natural and traditional, to give children an
understanding of the craft and effort gone into
producing them. Wooden toys are also very often of
high quality and handmade. Parents also like
children to play with similar types of toys that
they grew up with as many of them can also be
educational. When buying a Christmas or birthday
present for a younger member of the family, consider
giving wooden toys as gifts.
A homemade wood clock can spruce
up your living area, while giving you something to show
off to visitors.
The most common, versatile and oldest material that is
used for making furniture is wood. Almost all varieties
of furniture can be made of wood. Wood is a soft
material and can be easily shaped. The finish obtained
is very good and occasional polishing can make it look
like new at all times. It can be carved easily and
beautiful objects can be created.
Carved living room
furniture can give a royal look to your living room.
Wooden furniture can be cheap or very costly depending
on the type of wood and carving work involved. Furniture
made of certain types of wood like oak, teak and
rosewood are very durable and so, are costlier than
others. Wooden furniture is best suited to homes as
these provide elegance and lifelong service.
You can build a traditional clock very simply and at very little cost. There are
thousands of craft outlets selling clock making parts and more importantly clock
inserts. No special skills or knowledge is needed, only patience and common
sense.
Note: You can view a bigger version of the wood turned items by placing your mouse curser on the
image and click. A new window will open with the larger image. When finished
viewing, just close the window and come back here to view the others.
Colour and markings may differ in
appearance slightly in your finished turning from the one's shown in the photo's
depending on wood used at the time they are turned. Each item is handcrafted
individually, so slight variances should be expected especially if ordering more
than one item. The sizes listed are approximate. They may be a couple of
millimetres taller, longer, wider or little shorter, etc.
